Have you checked out Romance of the Three Kitchens? Forget about that white nepotism show on premium cable, this is a voice ofa generation of vaguely-directionless college-educated NYC-dwelling 20-somethings adrift on the bitter sea of mellow malaise. Which, to be honest, really isn’t my thing at all. But what I love is, it’s about the food. Every single one of the dishes shown is something I grew up eating and cooking. Dan Dan Mian (embedded above). Steamed FishBeef Chow Fun. Cucumber Salad. This is how Chinese Americans eat at home, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before, at least in such straightforward manner. These ingredients, these pantries, these techniques, are pretty much what you’ll find in all the kitchens in my family. Man, it makes me hungry. And even if the quirky little vignettes aren’t exactly enthralling, there’s a poignant simplicity to the voices which I can nevertheless appreciate. It doesn’t have to be hipper than thou or too clever by half. It’s been growing for more than a year, gaining internet momentum; it’ll be interesting to see if any big networks pick this up.

Love this!
